Po devíti letech od sebevraždy strýce Ferdyho přijíždí domů na Vánoce syn jeho sestry Jennifer Aidan se svou dívkou Emily. Postupně se sjíždějí i další příbuzní a přátelé: rodinný přítel Dominic, sourozenci Jennifer – bratr Ross a sestra Kate s manželem Digbym a dětmi Howardem a Phoebe. Při večeři najde Howard lístek, kde je napsáno, že na Štěpána budou všichni, na jejichž rukou ulpěla krev, mrtví. Všichni se na Howarda zlobí, on však tvrdí, že vzkaz nepsal. Po mši v kostele jede teta Lydia zaparkovat auto do garáže. Tam se začne dusit kouřem z výfuku, Dominic s Emily to však zaslechnou a zachrání ji. Lydia tvrdí, že motor vypnula a dálkové ovládání vrat nefungovalo, ačkoli Emily otevřela bez problémů. Jennifer ji uklidňuje, že jen zmatkovala. V noci slyší Lydia nějaké zvuky, vyjde z pokoje a spadne ze schodů. Nehodu přijíždí vyšetřovat inspektor Barnaby se seržantem Scottem. Mezitím se Lydia v nemocnici probere a tvrdí, že ji ze schodů někdo shodil.
