Katie Elder fick fyra söner. Vid hennes begravning återvänder alla hem till Clearwater i Texas för att hedra hennes minne. John Wayne spelar den äldste och tuffaste av sönerna, revolvermannen. Tom är duktig kortspelare och bra på att skjuta om han måste. Matt är den tystlåtne – ingen har någonsin kallat honom feg… mer än en gång. Bud , är den yngste. Allt hopp om värdighet ligger hos honom. Filmen, regisserad av den välkände västernmästaren Henry Hathaway (”De sammanbitna”), är en berättelse i två plan. Samtidigt som det är en machoberättelse är det också ett gripande drama, från början till slut, om det inflytande Katie Elder hade på sina söner.
