A Mahdi-féle felkelés idején és helyszínén (Angol-Egyiptomi-Szudánban) játszódó történet. A Szuezi-csatona két mérnökének gyermekeit, a 8 éves angol Nelt és a 14 éves lengyel Sztást az áruló Smain emberei elrabolják, hogy így kényszerítsék az egyiptomi kormányt vezérük családjának szabadon engedésére. A korát meghazudtolóan bátran és felelősen cselekvő Sztás azonban - többszöri próbálkozás után - megszabadítja nemcsak Nelt, de még két néger rabszolgát is elrablóiktól (lelövi őket). Csakhogy mire ez bekövetkezik, már mélyen Afrika még fel nem térképezett területén járnak, vadállatok és harcias törzsek között.
