Der er gået 40 år siden Cylon-krigen. De menneskeskabte robotter, Cylonerne, vendte sig mod deres skabere, og resultatet blev en næsten altødelæggende krig. Da krigen sluttede, forsvandt Cylonerne. De gemte sig i deres egen lille krog af universet og lod ikke høre fra sig igen. For at forsøge at forhindre endnu en krig byggede menneskeheden en diplomatisk rumstation og inviterede Cylonerne til at mødes en gang om året for at holde en dialog i gang.  Hvert år rejser en diplomat til stationen for at mødes med en repræsentant fra Cylonerne. Og hvert år rejser han hjem med uforrettet sag. Hvert år sætter han sig ved et bord med to stole og spejder mod døren i den modsatte ende af rummet i håb om, at dette er året, hvor Cylonerne vil bryde deres tavshed. Men i 40 år har han måttet tage hjem uden at have reetableret kontakten med Cylonerne.
