Film je zasazen do malého irského města Clones počátkem šedesátých let. Francie Brady je dvanáctiletý chlapec, jehož fantazie je krmena televizí – vetřelci, komunisty, atomovým věkem. Když se jeho matka nervově zhroutí, je odkázán na péči svého chladného a vznětlivého otce alkoholika. Francie tráví většinu svého času povídáním se svým nejlepším přítelem Joem Purcellem o gangsterech, kovbojích a indiánech, komiksových příšerách a o hrozbě jaderného útoku aktuální na začátku šedesátých let. V důsledku vyostřeného konfliktu s chlapcem Phillipem Nugentem a jeho matkou skončí Francie v polepšovně. Provinčním městem otřese jeho reakce na fakt, že nakonec zůstává na světě úplně sám. Jeho následný vražedný čin je pak jedním z dalších důsledků jak jeho odtrženosti od reality, tak i nekontrolovatelného násilí.
